Thread: If we are going to rebuild we may as well do it as a FBS team

  1. Default If we are going to rebuild we may as well do it as a FBS team

If we are going to essentially start over by ditching Baker and Hatcher we may as well rebuild as an FBS team instead of starting over in the FCS which essentially leads us nowhere in the long run. GSU has grown tremendously but 20 years ago our average attendance is the same as today. It is pretty clear that we hit the FCS ceiling long ago. For GSU 18-20k attendance is about all the interest you will ever get for the FCS. We have 6 national titles...another 2 will really not change anything for the University or football program.

Despite our current troubles, it is not really necessary to be at the top of our game to move up to the FBS. Most teams that move up to the FBS were not a dominant FCS team. If we get a good AD and coach, they can turn the program around quickly with the talent available in GA. I think hosting teams such as NC St, Maryland, Ga Tech, Missouri, Oklahoma St etc will be good for Statesboro. After 20 years of stagnation, our fans deserve a new boost of energy and enthusiasm that can only be obtained at the next level.

Often during the tough times some of the best things can happen. GSU will soon have 24k students and will be a major University. It is time to move on from this small time football and step up to the plate. Now is as good of a time as any.

And before you say "we can't compete in the FCS, we sure can't compete in the FBS". Sure it will be a struggle for the first couple of years, but a good coach with the talent in GA can turn it around quickly.

Ditch Baker now; Hatcher has one more year to make it to the playoffs and show significant progress; move up to FBS in 2012.

Great idea. Now who wants to pony up the $9M to get us started?

That was Sam Baker's number. Once he is gone a good AD can get things started with an additional $3 million which will not be hard to get.

If we can average 18k in the FCS in 1989, we should easily be able to draw 24k plus as an FBS team in 2012-2015.

This program has had enough "we can't do it attitude" over the past 10 years that has led us into the ground.

The program was founded on the attitude of "we may not have much, but if we fight like hell we can do anything we want"

Now the attitude is " We dont have much and believe we have even less and should be grateful for the little we do have"

May as well move this post up after what has unfolded over the past few weeks.

If we are going to rebuild, lets do it as a FBS team. Compete in the FCS for 3 more seasons after announcing within the year that we intend to move up in 2013. This will help rally the fan base and bring on many new fans. Time to step up to the plate and now is as good of a time as any.

And we can use Western Kentucky out of the Sunbelt Conference as a blueprint. Let's see, they have spent all this money that their fans wanted to get them to go FBS, they are 0-9, drawing a little over 10,000 fans for home games and they are ready to fire their coach and their AD. We've got the last two pieces in place so let's go for the whole deal.

Why else drive to Statesboro from long distances? To see a mediocre DII team and coaching?
"Losing is the most disgusting thing that you can experience...We feel we need to surround ourselves with people who feel that winning is the most important thing in the world. If you feel that way, and I do, and I think our players feel that way, then losing has got to be about the worst thing that can happen to you." Erk Russell
