Thread: Watched the Maine game... and then the Georgia State game

  1. Default Watched the Maine game... and then the Georgia State game

Youtube has condensed versions of the games so I fast forwarded through most stuff, mainly focusing on offense.

The improvement the team has made over the course of the year, between Maine and Georgia State, is pretty incredible. Blocking was terrible, they couldn't finish drives and had to keep kicking field goals, snaps flying over the QB's head, fumbles, JD King had no idea how to play in this offense, they weren't utilizing Kennedy effectively, etc.

That being said... I think Justin Tomlin is going to be excellent taking over as a RS junior when Wertz is gone... He will have 3 years in the offense, and when you watch the Maine game you can see his athletic ability, his arm strength on passes, and he runs that option pretty well.. He looked like a veteran in there on some plays, selling the pitch, etc. His pitch needed work, but you can tell he is a good player for this offense and he has a good arm. GSU is going to be just fine at QB for years to come.

Yeah, Kennedy was completely ineffective in the Maine game.

Was pretty hard to see him on the field

Hopefully we come out of fall camp next year at the level we were at in game 6 this year. I’m sure Lunsford and staff will keep refining their process in year 3 and the continuity will provide tangible results.

But he's good at different things. Hopefully, our staff will recognize that.

I think Tomlin (behind the right line) gives us a serious capability to really have the kind of passing threat we need. (Not taking anything from Werts, but Tomlin is better in that regard.)

I also remember a HELL of a lot of drive-killing penalties and bad snaps in that Maine game. A whole lot.

The offense was not ready to take the field for that game, and we could have lost.

The game does give us some stuff to focus on for the off-season. We weren't prepared. Sure, having Werts out was not helpful, but it was more than that. We played very undisciplined and sloppy. Fortunately, around game 6 or so, the snaps and penalties finally got nailed down.

Got to figure out how to come 100% correct next season. Those first few games were extremely sloppy, and we were lucky to beat CCU and USA.

Once we finally started seeing some actual GS football, things went in the right direction.
At New Mexico, when DeBesse had a QB who could pass they do so more. They broke school records for passing plays over 50 and 80 yards. Lamar Jordan at UNM was an effective passer.

Offensive Consistency is definitely starting to show in the last six games versus the first six. You can tell by the number of offensive points put up.

I agree with everything about progression. What I don’t understand is how anybody can watch Tomlin under throw several passes in the Maine game, one that should have been a touchdown, and then say when Tomlin replaces Werts we will have a throwing quarterback. Werts is probably going to break the school record for touchdown passes next season and has been incredible throwing the ball the second half of the season.

I'm 100% supporting our current staff and totally optimistic about the future. If it takes 6 games to iron out snaps, penalties, and passing next year somebody needs to call Houston.

Kennedy has made a big turn around for sure. Those first four games its almost like he was invisible out there.
