Thread: Georgia fills slots on football schedules but no Georgia Southern

  1. Default Georgia fills slots on football schedules but no Georgia Southern

ATHENS — Georgia is not only loading up with Power 5 conference opponents on future football schedules but filling slots with guarantee games in Sanford Stadium as well.
The school will pay UMass and UAB $1.9 million for future games in Athens, according to contracts obtained Tuesday, Aug. 13, by the Athens Banner-Herald in an open records request.
UMass will visit on Nov. 23, 2024, according to a contract signed in April. UAB visits on Sept. 23, 2023 in a contract signed in July. UAB is already scheduled to visit for a 2021 game in Athens.
In addition, Georgia has added FCS games with Samford on Sept. 10, 2022 (for a $500,000 guarantee) and Tennessee Tech on Sept. 7, 2024 for a ($550,000 guarantee). Those contracts were signed earlier this year. The Bulldogs also have a Nov. 20, 2021 game against FCS Charleston Southern ($500,000).
The $1.9 million guarantee for the UMass and UAB games match the amount Georgia will pay Kent State in 2022, UNC-Charlotte in 2025 and Western Kentucky in 2026.

UMass lost 66-27 to Georgia on Nov. 17 last season.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart wants to line up three Power 5 conference opponents on future schedules, and the Bulldogs have done that with home-and-home series with Oklahoma, Florida State, Texas, UCLA and Clemson.

*No longer require GS on the schedule to prepare for GT.

I would take it personal if they sceduled Mercer or KSU, but it is appears that they are no longer interested in sceduling in-state G5/FCS programs.

Isn't that in line with the Saban mentality?

Umm...We were on a four year rotation with uga 8 years prior to PJ being hired at GT, and have been absent from any future contracts even when it seemed like PJ might be there much longer. So while some motivation as of late may have been removed, it doesn't alone explain our absence from their schedules.

The real reason is that the SEC has a behind closed doors agreement to not play any in state Sun Belt team. The only reason we got the last one while in the Belt was because it was scheduled ahead of time. They asked to move it up a year from 2016, saying it was because they were wanting to begin adding another conference game - but the SEC never followed through on that idea. Never mind there was at least another game that could have been moved. But we took the deal, likely because under the then current agreement - we were getting paid as an FCS team. The agreement to play earlier resulted in a new deal where we were paid as an FBS opponent. We cashed in, and nearly ate their lunch too.

It isn't personal, it's an SEC thing. Loosing face in state is a risk they don't need to take. They pretty much sell out anyway, and we proved how big of a risk we are in that last game and previous upset of UF and near upset of GT and NC ST. If they felt that they had nothing to lose as a program or as a conference (and anything to gain), then you wouldn't see such consistency conference wide. It simply is NOT a coincidence. Not every SEC team has the ticket sales numbers of UGA, yet non of them will schedule an in state Sun Belt game.
We share a similar footprint with the SEC, maybe that is a factor.

But the GT thing doesn't hold much water as an excuse.

Would be nice to get some state legislation that requires in state teams to play like some other states have done. But they probably have too much alumni in government seats for that to gain any footing. Our best hope is to make the Access Bowl and have UGA wind up 1 game out of the playoff - thus forcing a rematch. THAT would be epic if we could pull that off. THEN, they might find some motivation to put us on the regular season schedule. In that event - I'd hold onto that WIN and only agree to give them a shot at saving face with a future home/home series that requires them to come to Paulson Stadium first. Otherwise, they might take the home game first and then buy their way out of coming to Statesboro.

    Hey, one can dream!

I wouldn't be surprised to see them schedule Mercer. KSU MIGHT be different as I don't think Kirby liked it when we ran that offense against him at Bama, he had no choice but to play GT when they ran it.
I imagine he is happy they don't run it anymore and doubtful he puts it on the schedule.

I like to tell dawg fans that too. But in reality, it's more like a raised eyebrow - concerned. Like, they know it's dangerous even though they don't really think we will pull off the win.
Like swimming at the beach. Nobody really thinks a shark is going to get them, but most people aren't really at ease swimming with them and try to stay vigil for a fin. Or at least they shouldn't be at ease.

The fans have no idea how dangerous we are.

When we beat them (and we will one day,) they will just fire their coach again.

The coaches are scared. They know how dangerous we are. In a good year, we stand a very good chance of taking those clowns down.
