Thread: End of the year thoughts on baseball

  1. Default Re: End of the year thoughts on baseball

Hennon has been here since 2000. Since he took over, we've had:

    Paul Johnson
    Mike Sewak
    Brian VanGorder
    Chris Hatcher
    Jeff Monken
    Willie Fritz
    Tyson Summers
    Chad Lunsford

In his 20 years, we have:

2 regular season championships (2000, 2001) -- AP was entering his senior year the last time baseball won a regular season title.

    5 conference tournament championships (2000, 2002, 2009, 2011, 2014) -- In those years, we finished 1st, 4th, 2nd, 5th, 3rd in the regular season.

    6 regional appearances (2000 (0-2), 2001 (1-2), 2002 (1-2), 2009 (0-2), 2011 (0-2), 2014 (1-2)) -- We have a combined 3-12 record in those regionals.

    1 at-large bid (2001)

After the titles in Hennon's first two seasons (2000, 2001) we've played 18 seasons across two conferences and we haven't won another. Here's the teams that won the regular season title in Hennon's 20 years here.

Season Reg. Season Champ GS Final Standing
    2000 Georgia Southern 1st
    2001 Georgia Southern 1st
    2002 The Citadel 4th
    2003 Western Carolina 2nd
    2004 College of Charleston 3rd
    2005 College of Charleston 2nd
    2006 Elon 4th
2007 College of Charleston / Western Carolina 6th
    2008 Elon 4th
    2009 Elon 2nd
    2010 The Citadel 4th
    2011 Elon 5th
2012 Appalachian State / College of Charleston 6th
    2013 Western Carolina 7th
    2014 Western Carolina 3rd
    2015 South Alabama 4th
    2016 Louisiana / South Alabama 6th
    2017 Coastal Carolina 5th
    2018 Coastal Carolina 3rd
    2019 Texas State 3rd

Ask yourself this: if this was football, what year would we have fired this coach?

The only football coaches who were fired were Sewak, Hatcher, and Summers. Of those 3, only Sewak had as much success as Hennon.

But I don't think you can compare football and baseball. Even the best baseball coaches lose 25-30% of their games. For comparison, Jack Stallings won less than 60% of his games here.

If I remember correctly, most of the schools in the Southern conference didn't even fill out the full scholarship limit in most years. Also, Southern had a big advantage with the Hope scholarship. Any kid on Hope did not count against the 11.7 scholarship limit. This advantage was one of the main reasons the UGA let David Perno go a few years after making it to the Championship series.

I my opinion Stallings did more with less talent and fewer advantages than Hennon.

I'm not comparing winning percentages. I'm comparing finishing place in the conference.

Here's the same chart for football:

Season Reg. Season Champ GS Final Standing
    1999 Georgia Southern / Appalachian State / Furman 1st
    2000 Georgia Southern 1st
    2001 Georgia Southern / Furman 1st
    2002 Georgia Southern 1st
    2003 Wofford 3rd
    2004 Georgia Southern / Furman 1st
    2005 Appalachian State 2nd
    2006 Appalachian State 5th
    2007 Appalachian State / Wofford 3rd
    2008 Appalachian State 4th
    2009 Appalachian State 4th
    2010 Appalachian State / Wofford 3rd
    2011 Georgia Southern 1st
    2012 Georgia Southern / Appalachian State / Wofford 1st
    2013 Chattanooga / Samford / Furman 4th
    2014 Georgia Southern 1st
    2015 Arkansas State 3rd
    2016 Appalachian State / Arkansas State 6th
    2017 Appalachian State / Troy 10th
    2018 Appalachian State / Troy 3rd

Anyone that ever finished worse than 3rd was fired (aside from 2013, we know the challenges there).

Ok. Regardless, our baseball program has never been as dominant as football. Stallings had a great run in the weak TAAC but we dropped off significantly when we moved to the Socon.

If we are comparing across sports, I think basketball would be a much more fair comparison.

I can keep going back and forth on this, but if we are basing the retaining of a coach on their ability to be as successful as our football program, then we literally would be firing every single coach we have.

Except for our men's golf coach.

Love being out of at large consideration before April. The idiots that say we couldn’t find a Hennon replacement, remind me what the two previous coaches did.
Too many Urkels on your team that's why your wins low
