Thread: Georgia Southern & Savannah State Announce New Partnership

  1. Default Re: Georgia Southern & Savannah State Announce New Partnership

Savannah State is notoriously poorly run, but I'm worried if it fails not only will GS be blamed for it, but GS will also be put in charge of cleaning up that mess.

What was one of the theories on why the Roman Empire fell? They expanded so much they got thinned out, couldn't exert the needed control. Let's hope we don't keep adding "territories". Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better.

We don’t need to get near SSU, that mess will never get straightened out.

BOR has made it clear they believe in consolidation and are willing to step on toes to get it done. They have been reluctant to shut SSU but if market forces make it inevitable, then they will act.

It is true that online degree programs provide many of the same "benefits": easy, not very rigorous degrees without a prestigious institution to back them up. If you want the degree and don't care about the quality of the education, and aren't aware of how foolish it will seem to people who know better, then an online degree will seem like a more appealing option. It is cheaper, there is no threat of campus crime, and you can do it from home. And, in this case, the resulting degree is worth about the same.

The reasons for not getting a degree entirely online at a Liberty U or similar institution are the same as the reasons for not attending SSU. People dumb enough to pursue their degree either way (online or at SSU) are likely to be unaware of how these degrees are viewed by more knowledgeable people.

Do u object to online degrees from all schools or just those you think are bad? Online degrees are becoming very popular and are being well accepted.

Accreditation and reputation matter. A mix of online courses in an otherwise on-campus degree is fine and most students do it. An all-online degree is OK if you have no alternative, but then reputation and accreditation are important.

This idea that anybody in the real world cares where your degree comes from is a myth. Unless you went to an Ivy League school, it's all the same...and that's only for your first job.

Many people have wasted countless dollars pursuing "prestigious" degrees when nobody really gives a ****.

Go wherever you can get a cheap/convenient education.

Mind you... everything I just said doesn't apply if you want a career in academia.

Your caveat about academia was correct, but even outside academia, the details matter. If I was working for a heating and air conditioning company and the boss said, "We need somebody to do geothermal. If you get an online degree from U Houston, which has the best program, and get certified for geothermal, I'll give you a big raise and start putting you on those jobs"...

Then I would rush to enroll in the online program at U Houston, and nowhere else. Basically, it pays to check with the people you are going to be working for, if you contemplate an online degree, and see what they recommend, what they need, and what they think is worth the effort. Kind of obvious, but probably truer than "it doesn't matter."
